The Power of Acknowledgement

Acknowledgement is the acceptance of truth or the existence of something.

Something interesting happened to me as I sat in my consultant’s office at the hospital on Thursday.

She opened up her notes and went back to when I was admitted to the hospital in April of this year. Her statement not only surprised me, but the reaction that followed was quite interesting. As she acknowledged how I was treated and that it was not right, the tears flowed.  I responded to her, “Your acknowledgement of my experience brought healing in that moment and letting me know that what I experienced did happen brought so much closure”. When it comes to women’s health, doctors, especially the male and sometimes the female doctors, tend to gaslight a lot, and I was in too much pain to call it out in April.

And that was what happened to me, especially when they refused at my request to give me another MRI scan. My consultant requested it in that moment and reassured me she was going to make sure I received all the support I needed, especially when I experience a flare-up from what they have called endometriosis and adenomyosis.  My focus in the second quarter was simply to improve my health.

I started to think on various moments throughout my life when I have experienced various traumas or personal injustices and the process it takes for me to acknowledge that what happened did indeed happen. It was this Thursday that I learnt the power of acknowledgement. This is a word that as a believer at times we run from because there is a pre-conceived notion that acknowledging a matter or circumstance is a direct dismissal of one’s faith in God. But I have learnt throughout the scriptures that God’s power becomes more effective when you acknowledge where you are weak or have fallen short.

In 2 Corinthians 12v7-9, we see Paul making this acknowledgement. He acknowledged there was a thorn in his flesh and he begged God to take it from him three times. But God’s response was “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness”. God does not expect you to be disassociated from your reality. It is in your acknowledgement, not the acceptance of your circumstances, that invites God’s power and strength into your life. Acceptance is the act of embracing something as true or valid, implying the willingness to live with that said thing or to come into agreement. Acknowledgement is not coming into agreement with your circumstances; it is merely recognising something is not right, then taking the necessary steps to make the changes to experience the change in circumstance needed.

As a believer, I have had to acknowledge the disorder that was taking place in my body, yet never accepted or came into agreement with the doctor’s report. In my moment of acknowledging my weakness in the matter, I realised that I was merely making way for Jehovah Rapha to come into my life and heal me. Many times, it is the lack of acknowledgement that has kept many in the same cycle and bondage. The moment you acknowledge what is happening and come into agreement with God’s power, there lies your greatest deliverance. Tonight, as I write this article, I would like to invite you to acknowledge your reality and make room for God to come in and change your life.

Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I invite You into my life. Lord, I acknowledge and accept You as my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Lord, I acknowledge the circumstances that I am facing right now, and I am asking You, Lord, to release Your power into my life to perfect the weakness that I am currently experiencing. Father, I confess over my life that all is well. Father God, I come into agreement with what Your word says over my life. Father, I thank You for Your strength and power, and I thank You, Heavenly Father, that Your grace is sufficient for me in Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
